Fun in the Sun: Preparing for Hot Summer Days and Longer Drives

Hot weather creates extreme conditions for cars, as the increased temperature can cause fluids and oil lubricants to break down. When lubricants breakdown, decreased performance is only the initial problem. Thermal breakdown can cause engine seizing and possibly permanent damage to your car's engine.

Late spring, after all danger of unexpected winter storms has passed, is the best time to get your car ready for summer heat. The following is a suggested list of items to check in preparation for summer travel:

Air Conditioning System is in good working condition
Refrigerants are fully charged
Antifreeze Check coolant levels
Hoses are in good condition, not soft or brittle
Battery Battery load has been tested for weakness. Test using a voltage regulator; ensure battery is at proper operating levels
Battery terminals are clean and in good condition and cables are secure
Brakes Brake fluid is at proper levels
Inspect brake pads for wear
Rotors are in good condition
Emergency Kit Summer Emergency Kit is assembled and in the car
Exhaust Exhaust system is free of leaks and/or holes
Lights Brake lights are in good working order
Headlights are in good working order
Reverse lights are in good working order
Oil An oil change has been done within the last 3,000 miles using a higher viscosity oil (or consult your vehicle's owner's manual for recommendations about how often the oil should be changed)
Tires Check air pressure for proper inflation
Inspect tread for wear
Transmission Transmission fluid is at proper levels
Check filter and change if necessary
Tune-up Oil filter has been changed
Air filter has been changed
Fuel filters have been checked for clogs or leaks
Windshield Wipers Are still in good condition (not cracked or worn)
Windshield Wiper Fluid Wiper fluid is at proper levels

Minimize summer Driving Hazards Using Preventive Maintenance and Care

Other things to keep in mind for safe summer driving:

  • If your check engine light is on, be sure to have the problem identified and fixed prior to a long trip or any other extended driving.
  • Inspect the tires every two hours or 100 miles.
  • Make sure the oil temperature stays within the proper range on the oil temperature gauge.
  • Check the water or coolant temperature gauge periodically.
  • Watch for bleeding tar which rises to the pavement surface, creating slippery spots.
  • Travel slowly enough to prevent overheating of tires and engines.
  • If your vehicle breaks down, stay close and out of the sun while waiting for help to arrive.
  • Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and fatigue.
Summer Emergency Kit:

Stay Prepared for Summer Driving, Too

Emergency kits aren't just for winter. You need to be prepared in the summer months, as well. If your car should become disabled, you'll want to be ready in case there's trouble.

Following is a list of items that you should keep in your trunk during summer months.

  • A cellular phone is probably the single most important item to have. If you don't want to pay a monthly fee, you can purchase a prepaid phone card. Or, simply purchase a cell phone and keep it (charged) in your car; if you become disabled you can still dial 9-1-1 and you'll be connected to the nearest help station.
  • Engine coolant
  • Sunscreen for body and lips
  • Sunglasses and a hat
  • A large flashlight and extra batteries
  • Some blankets and/or sleeping bags
  • Waterproof matches or a lighter
  • Non-perishable food items like high-energy protein bars or trail mixes with nuts and raisins
  • Bottled water
  • A first aid kit
  • A properly inflated spare tire, jack and lug wrench
  • Jumper cables, signal flares, and other car emergency items
  • Warning device (flares or reflective triangles)
  • Compass
  • Pocket knife
  • Plastic trash bags for wind protection
  • Small toolkit that includes pliers, wrench and screwdriver
  • Cards, games, and/or puzzles to help pass the time
  • Extra quart of oil
  • Emergency $10 or $15 (for gas or other unexpected small purchases)
  • Atlas and state/local roadmaps
  • Emergency contact list (in case you are unable to provide this information)
  • "Call Police" sign
  • Hand cleaner (dishwashing liquid works well, as it contains a de-greaser) and paper towels
  • Empty gas can
